About cylindrical poles
Cylindrical poles are turned on a rounding machine, which removes the natural taper and gives a consistent diameter along the full length. That makes them the easiest poles to build with: rails, brackets and roof sheets sit flush, and a row of posts looks uniform.
Choose the diameter by load and span. As a rough guide, 75–100 mm suits garden fencing and light structures, 125–150 mm suits pergolas and carports, and 180–200 mm is for heavier structural work. Your engineer or plans take priority for anything load-bearing.

Treatment and safe handling
Pressure treatment is what lets pine stand outdoors and in the ground for years. Here is how it works, and what the hazard classes on a quote mean.
How pressure treatment works
- Load. Dried timber goes into a sealed treatment cylinder.
- Vacuum. Air is drawn out of the cylinder and out of the wood cells.
- Pressure. Preservative floods in and is forced deep into the timber.
- Fix. A final vacuum removes excess, and the preservative fixes in the wood to protect it against fungal decay and wood-boring insects.

Working with treated timber
- Wear gloves, a dust mask and eye protection when sawing or drilling, and cut outdoors.
- Sweep up sawdust and offcuts, and dispose of them with general waste.
- Never burn treated timber, offcuts or sawdust.
- Wash your hands before eating, drinking or smoking.
- Do not use treated timber where it will touch food, drinking water or animal feed.
Questions about cylindrical poles
What is the difference between cylindrical and tapered poles?
Cylindrical poles are machined to one diameter along their full length. Tapered poles keep the tree's natural shape, thicker at the butt end, and are graded by size class (K2 to K8). Cylindrical poles give a neater, uniform finish; tapered poles are a practical choice for fencing and farm-style structures.
How deep should a pole be planted?
A common rule of thumb is about a quarter to a third of the pole's length below ground, set in compacted soil or concrete. Follow your engineer's or supplier's specification for structural poles.
